HTML 5 is the able revision of its predecessor HTML 4, which was created in 1997. HTML 5 was launched in 2012 as a result of W3C Candidate's recommendation. This essentially means that the latest version has the capability to provide easy understanding by all kinds of computers and devices while retaining the ability to demonstrate advanced multimedia support and web design. It's interesting to note the history of the development of this language.

Features of HTML 5

HTML 5 is developed with the express purpose of catering to low power devices like tablets and smart phones. In an era where 75% of the working population accesses the internet through mobile technology, HTML 5 is sure to emerge as a winner.

There are numerous new syntactic features in HTML 5. Some of them are the brand new elements. There is wide level integration of SVG (SCALABLE VECTOR GRAPHICS). SVG will eliminate the use of general tags.

There are some elements which increases the richness and the content functionality of documents. The DOM (document object model) is now the central logic in HTML 5. HTML 5 has a uniform definition for processing all invalid documents and this makes life easier for most web design professionals and software developers.

The roots of HTML5

HTML 4.01 didn't undergo updating since the year 2000 since the "world wide web consortium" (often referred to as W3c) was investing its resources in preparing an updated version of XHTML2.0.

However, in 2009 after a final review of the capabilities of XHTML and the progress earned so far the W3C association decided to suspend all action on XHTML 2.0 and not to renew it. It is then that work begun on development of HTML 5 in collaboration with "Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group". Many software developers and professionals working on web design compare HTML 5 to FLASH.

How is HTML5 different from Flash?

Both Flash and HTML 5 have the inbuilt capacity to support advanced video and audio files within the web page. Both languages can be use to work on scalable vector graphics. However Flash has a superior capacity for providing support for interactive mediums and animation.

In fact, web designers and multimedia professionals work on their projects with the extensive use of Adobe Flash. HTML 5 cant support interactive multimedia based animation on its own. It has to be supported by JavaScript or CSS3. HTML 5 provides excellent browser support and Steve Jobs (the erstwhile CEO of Apple Inc) was an avid believer in the virtues of HTML 5.

Many developers and designers believe that HTML 5 is more suitable for the mobile era as it has made the use of Flash redundant while consuming video or audio content. HTML is now recognised as a living standard. This essentially means that it will always be under a process of updating and constant improvement. As of now, Mr. Ian Hickson of Google is working as the editor of HTML 5.
