    • 1). Use a stud finder to determine the approximate width of the wall studs lining your window.

    • 2). Hold the curtain rod brackets to either side of your bedroom window, positioned a few inches higher than the top of the window so the curtains will block any light spill above them.

    • 3). Mark the positions of the brackets with a pencil. These brackets must be over the wall studs, since drywall will not be able to support the weight of the heavy curtains.

    • 4). Use a level to ensure that the marks are perfectly aligned, and a measuring tape to ensure that they are the same distance from the window edge and from the floor. The height of the brackets depends on the height of the curtains, which should hang 1 inch above the floor.

    • 5). Drill 1/16-inch pilot holes into the wall at the positions of the screw holes on the brackets.

    • 6). Screw the brackets to the wall using 2-inch wood screws. The screws included with the brackets are likely too light for the blackout curtains.

    • 7). Color the heads of the screws with a marker that matches the color of the brackets.

    • 8). Thread blackout curtains onto the curtain rod, then hang the curtain rod onto the brackets.

    • 9). Spread out the curtains as wide as possible to block out the majority of the outside light.
