What Is a GP4 File?

    Guitar Pro 4

    • Created by Arobas Music, Guitar Pro 4 saves guitar tablature in GP4 files. These files are music notations accessible by many musical development applications. Tablature for guitars, bass and other stringed instruments are saved in the same file format. Some GP4 files may contain tabs for multiple instruments, allowing collaboration among musicians.

    Software Compatibility

    • Guitar Pro 4 files are accessible on Windows, Linux and Mac operating systems. Applications such as TuxGuitar, DGuitar and KGuitar support the Guitar Pro 4 file format, as does the Arobas Music Guitar Pro application. KGuitar is a Linux-based application that will not function on a Mac, but the other applications function well on any operating system.

    Considerations

    • The Guitar Pro file extension format indicates the version of the software that created the file. For example, the GP4 format is produced in the Guitar Pro 4 series. Arobas Music does not include backward-compatibility in the Guitar Pro software, so older applications cannot open the files created in newer versions.

    Alternatives

    • A less-common file format for the GP4 extension applies to a Windows fax service. In this case, a GP4 file is a CCIT Group 4 fax file. The format is used as a generic file type for fax files when there is no default fax handler on the computer. Access these files from applications like the SFax Tools suite, FaxSee Pro and Magic View.
