What are the trends in picture framing in 2012 and how can you frame a picture with both minimalist and creative techniques.
This article is about the observations of a trendy custom picture framer based in Brisbane, but the trends in picture framing generally come and go on a worldwide cycle.
Modern picture framing is often dictated to by the manufacturers of furniture rather than any specific picture framing trend.
One thing is certain, wooden picture frames are desirable and sort after.
The latest trend in picture framing harks back to the simplistic and minimalistic lines of Danish furniture.
The clean natural timber look rather than a highly polished or varnished timber.
Timber frames are more likely to be more natural in colour rather than stained.
The understated elegance of a natural timber frame or veneered frame is going to dominate as the opulent feeling created by displaying natural somewhat exotic timbers becomes the norm.
The colours of the timber frames are likely to be natural but based around the softer cappuccino and grayer coffee tones rather than solid stained colours of the past.
The natural grain of the timber will be enhanced by showing off its beauty and chatoyancy through creative veneering by master craftsmen.
Chatoyancy is the term given to the variegated light that is given off by the natural grain in timber.
Think of the three-dimensional look of the back of a violin, to get the idea, but then take it back a level to its natural stage.
This is where the hot trend in picture framing will be in the simple lines of 2012.
The distressed timbers are even quite highly polished or refined.
The US market seems to have a barn wood trend that is still strong.
Whether due to the lived with nature, rubbed back painted look that can enhance many pictures without distraction or whether it is because the industry is resorting to treading water rather than setting new trends the USA is gripped by minimalism if the trends showcased in industry magazines are anything to go by.
In the high-end of simple but elegant I have noticed an ongoing strength in silver picture frames.
Earlier in last decade the swing to silver was fully on with many framing companies releasing colder stainless steel and bright silver looking frames.
They were very cold and I felt they had no love in their designs.
Hard angles and hard colours with uninspiring finishes.
The general public must have liked his trend because we still get asked for Chrome, Stainless, and other cold silvers.
I preferred the intellectual off tones of tinted silvers and textures that suggested gentle hammering or distressing rather than the plastic unemotional look.
I always prefer frames that capture a mood, reflect the light, create an ambience.
The silvers have been so strong as a trend in picture framing for several years now.
Finally the silver tints have got warmer and more emotional.
The finished frames have depth and texture that reflects both the artwork and the surroundings.
All of the darker silvers, textured architectural greys and somewhat oddly the bright strong golds will continue to grow in our area in 2012.
Some of the trends are largely due to the Australian Dollar being so strong that we have a huge number people travelling overseas.
They bring back papyrus and paintings from overseas.
We often hear the stories of how artist X recommends such & such a framing yet they have never had that type of framing done before.
The strong Aussie dollar has also allowed us to experience even higher levels of refinement when it comes to picture framing.
Suppliers have been more will to import high-end framing materials and offer them for sale at competitive prices.
Picture Framing is always really going to be a luxury item so even though the finishes on frames is simple, custom-made and finished picture frames are still going to be expensive and not for everyone.
