Hang Up Your Birdhouse

You found a birdhouse that meets with all the proper specifications.
It has a good roof to deflect the rain, drainage in case water gets inside, good ventilation, and an appropriate sized opening for the birds you are hoping to house.
Now, where should you hang it? The obvious first choice for you may be "in a tree.
" Yet, this is the wrong place to hang a birdhouse.
This is because predators can easily get into trees: raccoons, cats, and snakes.
Rather, you want to hang your birdhouse on a freestanding pole.
You should not position this pole under a tree because an animal could jump down from the tree and land on the birdhouse.
Do not position your birdhouse directly over water.
If the baby birds fall out, they will drown.
Don't position it too close to your house, else your movements may scare the birds from taking up residence in the birdhouse.
Where you position the opening is also important.
Face the opening south or east (or away from your prevailing winds).
Mount the birdhouse 5 feet to 20 feet in the air.
Birdhouses also cannot be spaced too close to one another either.
You should put a baffle guard on the pole that contains the birdhouse.
This is so that cats and other animals cannot climb up the pole.
Once you have mounted your birdhouse, then just sit back and wait.
Watch it from a distance to see if any birds have taken up residence.
First you will see birds going in and out, simply to check out the house.
Next, you will see them carrying sticks to build a nest.
After that, for a short while there will not be much activity as the birds are sitting on the eggs.
Once the eggs hatch, you will feed both mother and father bird making frequent trips to and from the nest to feed the young ones.
If you notice that a baby bird falls out of the nest, simply pick it up and put it back inside.
Contrary to popular belief, birds do not have a strong sense of smell, and so the smell of your hands will not present the parents from continuing to take care of the birds.
