What Are the Effects of Compost Bins on the Environment?
- Compost bins decompose organic waste for reuse in gardens, benefiting the environment.wheelbarrow and bins image by Horticulture from Fotolia.com
Compost bins are used for making compost, which is a nutrient-rich organic material such as decomposed leaves, straws, wooden chips, paper, kitchen waste, such as vegetables and fruits; and grass. Whether made at home or bought from a manufacturer, these bins recycle the organic waste into compost that is rich in humus, thereby, reducing the wastage of natural resources and benefiting the environment. Since nearly 33 percent of the home waste can be composted, the utility of compost bins to the environment is well-established. - When organic waste is dumped into landfills, anaerobic decomposition of the matter produces methane, a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. If more organic waste from kitchens and gardens is recycled in compost bins, then less biodegradable material would be thrown into the landfills, and hence, there will be lesser probability of occurrence of global warming due to decrease in production of methane gas.
- Compost bins help in checking soil erosion because the compost added to the soil gives the soil greater moisture retention capacity because it binds the loosely held soil particles into a cohesive aggregate. Soils with compost also need less frequent watering in contrast to soils having chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Due to lesser dependence on toxic chemicals, the plants nourished with nutrients from compost bins also grow healthier and release vital oxygen into the environment for the benefit of all living beings.
- Compost made in the bins has the ability to bind heavy metals, which can otherwise cause water pollution when they merge with water resources. Since the use of compost bins also minimizes the amount of organic waste entering the landfills, there is less air pollution due to curtailment of the production of methane gas. Because compost bins curtail water and air pollution, they are a boon for the environment as well as humanity.
