How to Reduce Acid on Your Teeth
- 1). Brush twice a day. If you must brush after eating or drinking, wait at least one hour. Brushing in general helps to promote healthy teeth and gums. However, if you brush immediately following the consumption of acidic foods or drinks such as sodas, fruits and fruit juices, you can actually brush away tiny bits of enamel that have been weakened by the acids in the food or drink.
- 2). Chew sugarless gum. Sugarless gum helps clean your teeth and promotes the flow of saliva. Saliva is a natural cleansing agent that also helps to restore a neutral pH level.
- 3). Drink milk and eat cheese periodically. This will help stimulate the flow of saliva as well.
- 4). See your doctor if you experience frequent indigestion or heartburn. Gastric reflux can introduce acid to the mouth. Medications can help to control this problem.
- 5). Eat whole foods rather than foods with additives. These additives often cause foods to have an acidic pH in order to lengthen their shelf lives.
- 6). Seek help for eating disorders. Anorexia and bulimia can cause the environment in your mouth to be more acidic.
