Michigan Seat Belt Law
- Under Michigan law, you are not required to wear a seat belt if you are driving (or are a passenger in) a bus, motorcycle or moped.
- The driver and any passengers in the front seat must wear a seat belt.
- All children under 4 years old must be buckled into a child restraint system in the back seat. Also, children between the ages of 4 and 8 and shorter than 4-foot-9 must be in a restraint system in the back seat.
- Any person 16 years old or younger must wear a seat belt.
- If there are more people in the vehicle than there are seat belts and all of the belts are being used properly, the driver is not in violation.
- You can be pulled over and fined if a police officer spots you without a seat belt on.
