    Antihistamines

    • Antihistamines generally are safe for use in dogs. Some dogs become sleepy when given antihistamines. These pills can help stop the dog's reaction to the irritant. Several different antihistamines commonly used in dogs include brand names Benadryl, Tavist and Atarax. A veterinarian can advise on the proper dosage.

    Corticosteroids

    • Corticosteroids can help reduce inflammation caused by an allergic reaction. Although corticosteroids can help with allergy problems, they should only be used for a short period of time because they can cause side effects, such as increased thirst and appetite and behavioral changes. Long-term effects can be diabetes and seizures. Some examples of corticosteroids are prednisone, cortisone and dexamethasone. Prescriptions are required for these medications.

    Omega Fatty Acids

    • Omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acids come in pill form and can help with allergic reactions because they are natural anti-inflammatory supplements. They are found in fish oils and plants. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids for allergic reactions and differ from the ones recommended for a shiny coat. Some brand names include Omega Pet, Derm Caps and EFA-Z Plus.
