Changing Ideas About Television with Discovery on Satellite TV

Anyone who has been paying attention for the past 20 years has noticed a shift in television programming. While of course traditional sitcoms, dramas, sports and now reality shows (really just big game shows) make up the meat and potatoes of television programming, cable and satellite TV provide new options for those who do not just want to 'zone out' in front of the TV. One of the most important new stations is the Discovery Channel, which has changed peoples' minds about the educational value of television.

Discovery Channel has a variety of shows that all revolve around learning more about our own planet and unraveling the mysteries of science. On the show Mythbusters every week, Jaime Hyneman and Adam Savage take on preconceived ideas that people have about how technology and science work and put them to the test. Can you really use electricity to melt bars and break out of prison? They will find out. As well, the other members of the Mythbusters team take on traditional views, "old wives' tales" and sayings to see if they have any validity. Will a bull really wreak havoc in a china store? Watch and find out.

Other shows like The Deadliest Catch and Man vs. Wild pit man against nature in all her awesome power. The Deadliest Catch follows fishermen in the freezing waters of the Bering Sea as they search for 'red and orange gold', the red and orange crabs that live in the icy waters. Man vs. Wild follows 'Bear,' a professional outdoorsman who alone with a camera can survive the hot deserts, swampy backwaters or Alaskan tundra, each one of the most unforgiving climates in the world. Watch him as he finds food, drinkable water and navigates using old fashioned techniques to get home safely.

As well, Discovery is known for their special series events that go deep into the ocean or far off into the sky to explore the mysteries of our solar system and beyond. Instead of finding out who wants to eat rats or who made some fake alliance on a reality show, you can learn about the biodiversity of the Amazon Rainforests or the origins of the universe. The knowledge now available through this magnificent medium can inform people across the globe about the newest discoveries from biology to quantum physics. Most of us have heard of 'the big bang' theory, but that is just the beginning. The latest theories, including 'the string theory,' are reevaluating the way the fabric of our entire universe is constructed. Through Discovery, the newest pieces of knowledge can be explained to even the most novice 'scientist' in all of us. As well, the newest specials about these topics and more are provided in high definition, to really capture the wonder of these new discoveries.

The Discovery Channel has truly changed what an average person knows about the universe and the world around us. Unlike the boring text books of old, Discovery has created an interesting and informative product for people of all ages to enjoy.
