    • 1). Contact an authorized telecommunications company which provides phone services in your area. Look in the phone book or visit an online directory, such as the Michigan Public Service Commission's list of registered telecommunications providers (see References below). AT&T is the largest provider of phone services in Michigan. National companies like Sprint and locally based companies such as Michigan Bell are also reputable and well-known phone companies within the state.

    • 2). Inform the telephone company that you would like to apply for a new telephone number. Whether you have recently moved, are adding an additional phone line to an existing account or just want to change your number, the phone company will help you. If you are a new customer, you will need to set up an account. A deposit is required to open a new account, so have a credit card ready.

    • 3). Complete the required registration. Information such as name, address and social security number are required in order to obtain a new phone number. In most cases, you will not be able to choose your new phone number. Phone companies in Michigan must register individual phone numbers with the state. For instance, AT&T's available phone numbers are not the same as Michigan Public Phone Co.'s available phone numbers. You are automatically given an area code which corresponds with the location of your residence. For example, Detroit residents have a (313) area code, Battle Creek residents have a (269) area code.

    • 4). Set up an appointment to have your phone lines installed. Choose a time which is convenient for you, as installation can run anywhere between 30 minutes and a few hours, depending on the difficulty of the job. Be aware that the phone technician may have to drill and cut holes into your wall in order to properly install the phone lines. If you live in an apartment building, contact your landlord and seek their permission before you go any further. If you have already existing phone lines in your residence, you may not need to have an installation tech come to your house.

    • 5). Sign the installation contract. The phone technician will ensure your new phone lines are installed properly. They will also verify that your new phone number is activated and working before you sign off on their work. If you are unhappy with your phone services, whether it is an installation issue or a problem with your phone line connection, call Michigan's Public Service Commission at 1-800-292-9555 or visit their website to file a complaint (see References below).
