Review: Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches...
Updated September 10, 2014.
The long awaited HarperCollins book "Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You... That You Need To Know", written by Teri Robert is now available online and in bookstores. It is my extreme pleasure to review this book for you. It's been far too long since a truly good book came out that explains Migraine disease and the various other headache types. I made a very honest effort to forget what I already knew of Ms.
Robert's work when reading this book. What I found is one of the most complete, well-rounded, up-to-date and empowering books that I have ever seen! Most books and articles that deal with Migraine disease or headaches usually only focus on one or two particular aspects of surviving or coping with them or they end up being so technical that one can't understand them. If you are struggling with any sort of head pain or you know someone that does, this is absolutely THE book to have!
Teri Robert provides us with a very complete, well thought-out book, written from her heart, based upon her extensive knowledge and her own experiences. She also includes the latest research by some of the most distinguished, prominent, leading neurologists, physicians and specialists. From the very beginning pages to the very last page of Appendix "F," Ms. Robert gives us the most comprehensive and up-to-date book that I have ever seen concerning not just coping, but truly "living well" with Migraine disease and headaches.
She offers the reader her story and her very practical experiences living with Migraines, then goes on to provide us with current reference materials written from both a compassionate sufferer viewpoint, and an extremely keen eye to her beloved self-professed vocation of patient advocacy. This truly is a book about empowerment and living well with Migraines and headaches. She helpfully includes our rights (and a pep talk) regarding doctors, support systems and -- above all -- staying strong mentally, spiritually and remaining positive throughout.
Ms. Robert's new book is not just another book that covers or touts one particular "miracle" cure for a Migraine or headache. This is real information based upon researching the medical literature, interviewing patients and doctors alike, and from personal experience. It went even further by providing specific tools, concrete coping skills; a simple and practical roadmap to success with it's very foundation based upon education and doing something for yourself. Be it information about diagnosis, traditional medicine, alternative therapies, or real life, it is all there. Symptoms, side-effects, risks and treatments are just a small part of a work that includes numerous case studies and expert advice.
We no longer need to place all of our hopes and control with someone else. Teri Robert provides a wealth of information about taking charge of one's own care and doing things that must be done, along with a partnership with a knowledgeable health care professional. She shares all types of current resources, additional readings, supplemental materials, and a very comprehensive glossary complete with a list of abbreviations. I am absolutely amazed at how much information about Migraine disease and headaches is crammed into it's approximately 300 pages.
If you are looking for the latest information about rebound, aka medication overuse headaches, you can find that also in Teri Robert's new book: "Living Well With Migraine Disease and Headaches." She not only tells us what current research says they are, she tells us what one can do to get themselves out of that vicious and very painful cycle. On the functional side, she provides a very useful and popular headache and Migraine diary, a health history checklist and other forms which can be used to ensure better care in the event of an emergency. Teri also provides a web site address in her book, which offers actual full-size electronic forms that one can download and review.
Can't seem to find the perfect doctor? This book provides guides us through finding health care professionals and real support. This is really the most practical Migraine disease and headaches book out there with current and up-to-date information. It is a valuable resource for anyone suffering from head pain or for someone who lives with one of us who has head pain. There just isn't any way for me to share with you even all of the different areas that are covered in this wonderful volume. A true investment in real practical living with Migraines or headaches. You won't be disappointed! This book shows us how we can "Live well."
