A Common Anxiety Disorder Symptom List - Are They Really Symptoms at All?

103 45
If we're going to look at a common anxiety disorder symptom list - those most often experienced by sufferers - we first need to ask ourselves if they are indeed symptoms.
Or if the word "sensations" would be more accurate and a better term to use.
You see, most of them aren't any more real than the "fear of impending doom" that's causing them.
They're the result of our minds playing tricks on us, the same mind that's telling us we need to fight some attacker or flee some danger that doesn't really exist.
The term "symptom" refers to something caused by a disease, like a runny nose is a symptom of a common cold.
But anxiety disorder is NOT a disease at all.
The point here is that if we call the sensations caused by a false fight or flight response symptoms, we're likely convincing ourselves that anxiety and panic disorders are diseases.
And if they're diseases, they should be treated with medications or medical procedures.
Do you see where I'm going with this line of logic? If we think of our anxiety problems as a disease, we're not going to take responsibility for what our minds are doing to us.
Therefore, we need to keep it in the right perspective, or we'll never be able to properly treat - or better yet, cure - what is actually an emotional and psychological problem.
Now that I hope I've cleared that up, here's the anxiety disorder "symptom" list I promised:
  • A sensation of a racing heart
  • Shortness of breath or hyperventilation
  • Chest pain
  • A tight, constricted feeling in the chest
Those come under the heading or what I like to remember as "the 400 pound gorilla sitting on my chest" I used to feel.
If you remember the TV commercials for a brand of luggage that featured a gorilla jumping on a suitcase, I thought when he got tired of jumping he rested by sitting on my chest.
Can you relate? Back to the list:
  • Tremors or shaking
  • Dry mouth, inability to swallow
  • Tense jaws
  • Sore and weak muscles
  • Excess sweating, even for no reason
  • A tingling feeling in your arms or legs
  • Stammering or stuttering
  • Flushing or blushing cheeks
  • Obsessive - usually negative - thoughts
  • Insomnia
  • Fidgeting
  • Nail biting
  • Nervousness
  • Excessive yawning and feeling exhausted
  • Nervous ticks
  • Eyes playing tricks on you
  • Jumpiness
Now, this last part of the list will include some problems that are actual physical maladies caused by unrelieved anxiety and panic:
  • Nausea
  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or spastic colon
  • Headaches
  • Grinding teeth
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Accelerated heart rate
The problems in this part of the list are truly medical issues resulting from severe anxiety disorder and will require medical (or dental in the case of grinding teeth) attention.
But again, these are not symptoms, they're results.
If you have an anxiety or panic disorder problem, I know you can relate to something on this list.
And you may have sensations that aren't listed here.
We all react in different ways.
Now, if when going over this list you were examining yourself to see if you feel any of these sensations, feelings or nervous ticks, you may have felt them come from out of nowhere.
Don't worry, this is also common.
All of us who have suffered or continue to suffer from anxiety disorder have gone through the same thing.
