Hana Yori of Japan

• Established in 1987, Hana Yori of Japan is on Grape Road, just to the north of the center of Mishawaka and less than five miles from Notre Dame. The restaurant features 12 a la carte nigiri sushi selections, including smelt roe, octopus, freshwater eel, yellow tail and salmon. The house specialty maki roll, the Hana Yori, is a vegetarian roll consisting of cucumber, Japanese pickles and green onion. Another featured house specialty roll is the Michiana, a combination of cucumber, crab, fresh eel and avocado. The restaurant also serves hibachi dinners--a chef prepares the entrees in front of diners on hot griddles built into the tables. The restaurant has a full bar. Hana Yori of Japan is open for lunch Mondays through Fridays and for dinner nightly. Reservations are recommended on weekends and holidays. Business casual attire is suggested. Toyo Grill

• Toyo Grill is on West Edison Road, adjacent to the Cinemark Movies 14 cinemas. In addition to its sushi menu, the restaurant specializes in Korean cuisine. The Ladies of Notre Dame and Saint Mary's College Picks gave the restaurant an honorable mention for its sushi in the "Best Japanese Cuisine" in its 2009 "Best of Michiana" ratings. Toyo Grill serves lunch and dinner daily. The restuarant does not take reservations. Casual attire is appropriate. Service has the potential to be slow at the restaurant, warns the the Graduate Theological Society at the University of Notre Dame in its area guide for new students, so try to visit when you can enjoy a leisurely meal.
