How to Make Tulip Sachets to Hold Bird Seed
- 1). Cut the full length of the tulip fabric 3 inches wide. Cut the strip in half so you have two strips 3 inches wide and equal in length.
- 2). Cut the full length of the double-sided fusible 2 1/2 inches wide.
- 3). Lay one strip of the tulip fabric front side down on the surface of the ironing board. Lay the strip of double-sided fusible interfacing on the fabric. There will be 1/2 inch of fabric on one edge that isn't covered with the interfacing. Lay the second strip of the 3-inch wide tulip fabric over the interfacing, matching the edges. Lay the heated iron on top of the fabric and iron until the fusible interfacing has locked the two fabric strips together. Work all the way down the strip of fabric with the iron.
- 4). Cut a strip of cardboard 3 inches wide. Take the pencil and draw the repeating petals of a tulip on the cardboard. Look at a picture to get a sense of the shape of the tulip petals, which are pointy. Take the scissors and cut out just the tips of the tulip petals, which should be cut only 1 inch into the 3-inch width of the cardboard.
- 5). Lay the cut cardboard pattern on the fused fabric strips. The tips of the petals should be even with the top of the fused fabric. Don't lay the pointy petal tips of the cardboard along the edge of the fabric that doesn't have the fusible interfacing.
- 6). With a fabric marking pencil, trace around the petals of the cardboard pattern. When you come to the end of the pattern, move it down and trace around it again. Create a repeating pattern all the way down the strip of fused fabric.
- 7). Take sharp fabric scissors and cut along the lines of the petals. Determine where to cut off the first section of the fabric strip to create one tulip. Make sure that you cut the length at least 1/4 inch longer than the finished tulip so there is an overlap.
- 8). Lay the cut tulip section flat on the work table. Cut a strip of the tulip fabric 2 inches wide and 1/4 inch shorter than the first cut tulip section. Run a line of fabric glue 1 inch down from the tips of the petals the full length of the tulip section. Lay the 2 inch width of fabric face down so the edge lays over the line of glue. Rub your index finger along the fabric to seat the glue into the fabric. Set aside to dry.
- 9). Match the thread to the tulip fabric section to be assembled. Thread a sewing needle and along the bottom edge where there is no interfacing, sew a gathering stick. (The 2 inch of glued-on fabric should be standing straight up). Weave the needle in and out of the fabric along the full length of the tulip section. Pull the thread gently when you get to the end to start creating the tulip shape. Overlap the ends by 1/4 inch.

Take one stem wire and bend a hook on one end. Insert it from the bottom into the inside of the tulip. Pull the thread tight until the fabric is gathered tight around the stem wire, Wrap the extra thread around the gathered fabric 3 to 4 times to firmly secure the tulip flower to the stem wire. Cut off the excess thread. - 11
Wrap floral tape around the gathered fabric and down on to the stem wire. Take artificial leaves and bind them with floral tape to the stem wire. Fill the inside of the tulip with birdseed, twist the end of the glued on fabric and tuck the end down into the belly of the tulip to complete the birdseed sachet.
