How to Remove a Processor & Heat Sink

    • 1). Discharge any static electricity you may have in your body by touching the side of a metal computer case. This prevents shorting out or damaging any of the electrical components.

    • 2). Unhook all devices and sources of power to the computer.

    • 3). Disconnect the power cable that runs from the fan, which is mounted on top of the heat sink, to the motherboard. If no fan is present, skip this step.

    • 4). Lift the retention clips that secure the heat sink to the board on top of the processor. Some retention clips are removable, while others are captive. Some heat sinks are held on the motherboard by screws. Remove them, if applicable.

    • 5). Pull the heat sink directly up off the processor. Be careful to avoid scratches or use excessive force.

    • 6). Pull the socket lever upwards to release the processor from the socket. Gently remove the processor from the motherboard.
