    • 1). Avoid sitting for long periods of time to help ease the pain. Whenever possible, lie down to take pressure off the coccyx area. Use a pillow to sit on when necessary to help cushion the area and relieve pressure.

    • 2). Take anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen to help reduce inflammation and pain, following the instruction on bottle. These medications can be found at any drug store; ask your pharmacist for help in selecting a brand. If something stronger is needed, speak with your doctor about prescription pain medications.

    • 3). Use ice to reduce swelling to the coccyx. When using ice, use it for 15 minutes with at least a half-hour off, four to six times per day. Be careful not to ice more then what is recommended, as it can cause frostbite.

    • 4). Relieve pain by using a hot tub, whirlpool or a moist heating pad. Use heat for 15 minutes, with at least an hour off, four to six times per day. Be careful to not heat more then what is recommended, as it can cause swelling and inflammation.

    • 5). Talk with a chiropractor about treatments options. Possible options are spinal manipulation, massage, stretching exercises, ultrasound, or electrical muscle stimulation (EMS). Chiropractors will typically take x-rays in order to determine the best course of treatment and can be found in your local area.
