With summers off, teachers have an opportunity the rest of the employed nation does not: travel. Fellowships are available for teachers interested broadening their horizons and turning that experience into a richer classroom experience for their students. - Fund for Teachers provides fellowships for self-designed summer travel to teachers of preschool through 12th grade. The application is available online in October and has a January deadline; the fellowship is awarded in April. Fund for Teachers hopes applicants will consider how their proposed travel experience will affect them as teachers, their classroom and their community.
- The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad fellowship is awarded to teachers or administrators in the humanities and social sciences from elementary schools through universities. Fourteen to 16 are chosen to attend one of seven to 10 seminars in countries outside of Western Europe. The award includes airfare, room and board, tuition and fees, and travel costs inside the host country.
- The English Speaking Union of the United States (ESU) sends qualified teachers to the United Kingdom for summer study at universities and teaching centers such as Oxford University, The Globe, and Scottish Universities International Summer School, Edinburgh. Fellows study topics including, literature, creative writing, acting, history, and politics. Would-be applicants much check with their local ESU branch for participation, deadlines and opportunities.
