Being the Father of the Bride is a father's greatest honour, he will be full of pride and probably very emotional as his daughter prepares for her big day.
The role and responsibilities are often cast as stereotypical, but other than paying for the wedding, there are several other duties that the father of the bride will usually perform.
Paying for a wedding is traditionally the responsibility of the bride's father, but with the soaring costs and a more flexible approach, the costs may be shared.
It is estimated that only thirty percent of modern weddings are paid for by the brides father.
It is important to establish who will take the financial responsibility at an early stage in the proceedings, with the average wedding costing between £5,000 - £15,000 this can place a strain on many household budgets.
Traditionally the father will pay for announcements in the press, stationary, the wedding cars and all transportation, flowers and button holes for the guests, his own suit, pageboys and mother of the bride outfits, the photographer, the venue and reception, the wedding cake, presents for the bride and groom and any other fees, such as wedding insurance.
With today's more flexible approach the costs may be shared, in fact fifty percent of modern weddings are paid for entirely by the bride and groom.
Other responsibilities which the father is unlikely to delegate will include, traveling with the bride to the wedding venue and accompanying her down the aisle.
Following the wedding, the father will usually stand with the new bride and groom to welcome the guests.
The father usually makes the first speech at the reception, followed by the groom and then the best man.
Following the reception, the father will traditionally dance with the bride and the brides mother, during the evening.
A father will always be there to support his daughter throughout her life, no less so before and during her special day, when he can provide the support that she needs and be available to help and advise on any matters she requests.
Most importantly as father of the bride, allow yourself sometime to enjoy and cherish the special day.
