    • 1). Remove the ear/neck protector, headband and crown straps by removing the fastenings with a wrench and releasing the tension knobs found on both sides of the helmet to lower the face shield. This applies to the most common fire helmets, including the Bullard Firedome FX and PX series helmets and the Jaeco Morning Pride series helmets; refer to the instruction manual for your fire helmet to be sure of the specific instructions.

    • 2). Clean the surface of the helmet with a rag and a mixture of mild soap and lukewarm water. This helps remove any smoke residue and debris and prepares the helmet for painting.

    • 3). Pour some of the desired color of flame resistant paint into a disposable container.

    • 4). Dip a paintbrush into the paint and paint the helmet, starting at the edge of one side and working your way around to the opposite side.

    • 5). Wait for the paint to dry completely. This should take about four to five hours; refer to the instructions on the paint to be sure.

    • 6). Repeat with a second coat to ensure a solid, even finish.
