NHRA Seat Belt Rules

    Seat Belts

    • All cars used for drag racing should have a seat belt with a quick release buckle. Additionally, all cars that are part of the race should have a driver restraint system such as a roll bar or roll cage to help prevent serious injury.

    Driver Restraint Systems

    • All cars that compete in drag racing require a quick-release, 3-inch shoulder harness that meets SFI Foundation Spec 16.1 and a crotch strap.
SFI is the organization that issues and administers standards for specialty and performance auto and racing equipment. SFI Spec 16.1 is the standard that applies to safety belts; it defines a driver restraint assembly, basic design dimensions and requirements.
All restraint systems have to be clearly labeled to show that they meet SFI Spec 16.1 and be dated by the manufacturer. Your seat belt has to be updated every two years from the manufacture date because seat belt webbing and thread degenerate from prolonged exposure to elements such as sunlight and, over time, this causes a loss of restraint integrity.
Additionally, all seat belt and shoulder harness installations must be compatible, originally designed to be used with each other and produced by the same manufacturer. Seat belts are not allowed to be wrapped around the lower frame rails, and bolts are never to be inserted through belt webbing allowed for mounting.
Cars using original equipment manufacturer (OEM) or an OEM-type seat can course their crotch strap in front of the seat instead of through the seat. Only seat belts that release all five attachment points in one motion are allowed to be used.
If you use an arm restraint with a restraint system that uses a "latch lever," a protective cover has to be installed to prevent the arm restraint from accidentally releasing the lever. If the seat belt you are using uses "duckbill" latch hardware, however, you don't need a protective cover.
Also, all harness sections must be mounted to the frame, cross member or reinforced mounting, and installed so that your body is limited from moving in different directions.
