The museum features exhibitions geared toward children and offers educational programs and curriculum. The museum also provides resources for teachers to use in their own classrooms. Admission to the museum includes all activities including performances and special events. On most days, the museum opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m., except on Friday, when it closes later at 9 p.m. The Boston Children's Museum offers various events throughout the year. For instance, "Game Factory" lets families use recycled materials to construct their own game. The Art Studio allows visitors to use art supplies to create paintings, collages or other works of art.

The museum focuses on science and technology education. It strives to encourage visitors to appreciate the impact of science, engineering and technology. It offers educational exhibits for children grades pre-K to 12. The Museum of Science includes many formats to share information, such as a 3-D theater with movies about bugs or sharks. Visitors may visit the butterfly garden for a 15-minute walk-through exhibition. Live presentations teach viewers on various topics, such as animals and electricity.

The Freedom Trail follows historic sites in the city involved in the American Revolution and related to many Founding Fathers. The two-and-a-half-mile-long red brick Freedom Trail has 16 sites along the way. These sites include the Boston Common, the State House, Park Street Church, Granary Burying Ground, King's Chapel, King's Chapel Burying Ground, a famous statue of Benjamin Franklin, the Old Corner Book Store, the Old South Meeting House, the Old State House, the site of the Boston Massacre, Faneuil Hall, the Paul Revere house, The Old North Church, Copp's Hill Burying Ground, Bunker Hill Monument and the USS Constitution.
