Windows Font Tools

    • Fonts are a simple, yet powerful tool that help computer users personalize their documents and create a mood with their printed words. Font collecting can be addictive, because there are so many fonts available. Windows users may want to find and manage their fonts, convert or rename them or even create some new ones. There are programs that run on Windows that will do all of these things and more.

    Font Converters

    • There are many types of font formats. To convert one format to another, use a program called TransType from FontLab. Convert a PC font to a Mac font, or vice versa, with CrossFont from AcuteSystems. Rename your fonts using TrueType Font Namer or Free Font Renamer.

    Font Managers

    • The best font managers not only let you view your fonts, but make it easy for you to install or uninstall fonts on your computer. Buy font managers such as MainType, X-Fonter, Fontonizer or Font Xplorer. Or save some money by using free font managers, including Fontomatic, Font Frenzy, FontViewOK, NexusFont or The Font Thing.

    Font Viewers

    • Font viewers and font managers are really two ends of one large category of font utilities. Those that are made to help you find, view or print your font collection, instead of helping install them, can be considered font viewers. Some commercial font viewers include Printers Apprentice, Advanced Font Viewer, Font Browser and Font ShowCase. Free font viewers include CfontPro and FontList.

    Font Troubleshooters

    • If you have trouble using your fonts, you might find some help from software designed to find and fix font errors or problems. Programs that do this include FontDoctor and Font Expert.

    Font Scanning Software

    • You may have a page of handwritten letters, or small drawings you want to make into a dingbat font. The way to do this is to get a program that will let you scan in your handwritten images and convert them to a font. Examples of these programs include Scanahand and ScanFont.

    Effects

    • Create special effects with your fonts using a program called FontTwister.

    Identify Fonts

    • Use a program called FontMatch to find a font on your computer that matches the font in an image.

    Font Creators and Editors

    • Advanced users may actually want to create their own fonts or edit existing fonts. TypeTool from FontLab and Font Creator from High Logic are programs that simplify font creation for those who don't have a lot of experience in this area. FontLab Studio is a full-featured, professional font creation software for graphic artists and type designers.
