How to Use Chloramphenicol
- 1). Talk to your doctor about your desire to use chloramphenicol. Tell him about your medical history, any allergies you have, and whether you are breastfeeding. Receive a prescription only after discussing the risks and benefits of this drug.
- 2). Take chloramphenicol as described by your doctor. Doses will be different for different patients. In general, adults will be prescribed 5.7mg per lb. of body weight every six hours.
- 3). Swallow the pill or liquid form of chloramphenicol on an empty stomach either one hour before a meal or two hours after a meal, with a full, 8-oz. glass of water.
- 4). Use a measuring spoon when taking the liquid form of chloramphenicol. This will ensure that you take the proper dose. Keep the liquid form of chloramphenicol in the fridge.
- 5). Visit your doctor to receive a chloramphenicol injection or follow the procedure taught to you by your doctor to inject chloramphenicol at home.
- 6). Take your chloramphenicol at regular intervals, and do not skip doses. Use your chloramphenicol for the full course of treatment, even if you feel better after a few days.
- 7). Visit your doctor regularly to have your blood checked for any problems that may be caused by chloramphenicol. Report any side effects or possible problems to your doctor.
