Low Numbers

Numbers 1 and 2 are the most commonly accepted recyclable plastics. These items include bottles for water, soft drinks, salad dressing, vegetable oil, milk, juice, detergent and shampoo.

Higher Numbers

Plastics also can be numbered 3 through 7, and the higher the number, the less likely recycling centers are to take the item. Items with the number 7, for example, are made of miscellaneous plastics and include sunglasses, phones, computer cases and signs.

Letter System

The letters included with the numbers designate the type of plastic that was used. For example, PETE (sometimes coded as PET) indicates that the item is made of polyethylene terephthalate. HDPE is printed on items made of high-density polyethylene.

Numbers and Recycling

The lower numbers are accepted by most recycling centers, curbside pickup and community drop-offs, but if you're motivated to do some research, you might be able to locate a recycling center that will accept higher-numbered items.

Purposes

Most types of plastic can be recycled but some cannot. Some types of plastics are easier to recycle and more suitable for a wider range of purposes, including the manufacture of carpet, furniture, crates, lumber, piping, tile and fleece. Others, such as vinyl or polypropylene, are more difficult and can't be reused as easily.
