How to Assemble a Stacked Wedding Cake

    • 1). Measure each layer of the baked cake or trace each layer onto a cake board. You may purchase pre-made cake boards from a local cake decorating shop or you can create them yourself from thin cardboard or plywood. Cut out a cake board for each layer.

    • 2). Arrange each layer of the cake on its own cake board, affixing the cake to the cake board with a few generous dobs of icing. Place the dobs of icing on the cake board center, then lay the layer of cake down on top of it and press down gently.

    • 3). Ice each layer of cake with the icing of your choice but do not add any decorations until the cake has been assembled.

    • 4). Cut lengths of cake support dowels to size. These can be purchased from cake decorating shops. It is best to use dowels that are pointed at one end. Measure the exact height of each layer of cake and cut three equal-length pieces of pointed dowel to that measurement for each layer.

    • 5). Insert the dowels into the center of each layer of cake in the shape of an equilateral triangle. Insert the pointed end of each dowel into the cake and press down until the point comes in contact with the cake board underneath the layer of cake. Do not press any dowels into the top layer of cake.

    • 6). Stack the layers of the cake on top of each other. Place the largest layer on the bottom and stack the other layers in order of decreasing size. Use a palette or pie server to adjust the stacked layers to avoid damaging the icing.

    • 7). Add any decorations, ribbons, or flowers to the stacked cake that you desire.
