Where Does Photosynthesis Take Place in Trees?
- A pigment known as chlorophyll in the chloroplasts in leaves absorbs light energy. Leaves also have tiny holes known as stomata, which allow carbon dioxide in the air to enter. The plant carries water from the roots through the stems and to the leaves for photosynthesis.
- Each leaf cell contains at least 50 chloroplasts, which are organelles that scientists suspect used to live as free bacteria. These chloroplasts conduct chemical reactions to change light energy into chemical energy that organisms can use.
- After photosynthesis, a tree stores some of the chemical energy in the form of sugars in chloroplasts. The tree also distributes these sugars to other parts of the plant.
