Throughout the years, the Houston Fire Department has expressed that the residents of Houston must take a proactive approach in lessening fire damage.
One concrete and simple way of doing this is by not placing candles near curtains or any furniture that is flammable.
Another way is by making sure that fire extinguishers are nearby fire hazards such as the kitchen, laundry area and generators.
In 2001, the Houston Fire Department developed a program called "Get Alarmed Houston", which basically asked private citizens to donate and promote the installation of smoke alarms in residential and commercial areas.
Their mission statement was centered on making it a priority to install smoke alarms in houses that are in dire need.
Its preliminary goal is to be able to eradicate fire-related incidents that could be prevented by smoke alarms.
Ultimately, the Houston Fire Department hopes to bring the community of Houston together to be able to make the city the safest from fire accidents around the world.
People have to realize that fires may start out small but become rampant in an instant.
What is important is that people practice good habits and discipline so that fires will not be an issue in their homes.
According to professionals, generators are one of the main reasons residential fires have started within the Houston area that has led to devastating fire damage.
Since most generators are powered by fuel, this makes it a dangerous fire hazard.
At the same time, it can also cause electric shock and carbon monoxide poisoning.
The difficulty with preventing fires by turning off generators is that it creates another risk which is candle burning.
There have been numerous incidents in the city of Houston wherein candles were the main cause for fires resulting to major disasters.
There were 48,256 fire events and only 10 fatalities based on last year's statistics tabulated by the Houston Fire Department.
The efficiency and reliability of the department can be attributed to their main goals and objectives.
Basically, their focus is for the improvement of preventing fires and raising awareness.
Also, they aim to hone their leadership skills and maintain the capital assets that will motivate the personnel of the department to work as a united team.
The Houston Fire Department prides itself for being the world's largest fire department in the world.
Many other fire departments develop their stations and teams on the structure of the Houston Fire Department.
The Houston Fire Department has come a long way ever since its humble beginnings in 1836 when the Allen Brothers arrived and named the city after General Sam Houston.
In this present era, Houston has become a beta world city due to its multi-cultural community and its advancement in technology and transportation.
The city of Houston has also proven in the recent years that it has been able to control fire damage and protect its residents from harm as well due to the efforts of the Houston Fire Department.
