Can I Bring My Tomato Plant Inside for the Winter?

    Types

    • Some smaller tomato varieties do better when grown indoors compared to other varieties, according to Colorado State University. These include Pixie, Patio, Toy Boy, Small Fry and Tiny Tim. The Virginia Cooperative Extension recommends a 5-gallon pot for tomatoes grown indoors in containers.

    Sunlight

    • Place the plant by the window and turn it occasionally so every side gets some sunlight over the winter. According to Virginia Cooperative Extension, vegetable plants generally need at least five hours of sunlight and perform best with eight to 10 hours of sunlight each day. Supplement natural light with a combination warm-white/cool-white fluorescent light bulb if there is not enough sunlight.

    Temperatures

    • Freezing temperatures can damage the plant. Maintain temperatures of about 80 degrees F during the day and 55 degrees during the night.

    Water and Fertilizer

    • Add only small amounts of fertilizer as recommended for the tomato variety because potted plants lack the volume of soil and humus to protect them from over-fertilizing. Water thoroughly until the water leaks out the drainage holes but not too frequently, just enough to keep the soil damp but not soggy.
