Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure.  Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, it effects a women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how Chinese herbs use to treat PMS.

Unlike acupuncture which uses needles in some stimulating point to treat illness, acupressure is a form of treatment which applies pressure in the stimulating point by fingers and thumb.

II. How acupressure effects women with PMS
1. Qi and blood stagnation
Qi and blood stagnation is the main problem for women with PMS. Some women with PMS may be caused by liver inability in fat and protein metabolism resulting in over production of levels of estrogen, others may be caused caused by blood stagnation in the abdominal region resulting in over active uterus muscles. Chinese herbalist believe by releasing the qi or blood stagnation, it will reduce or eliminate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

2. Imbalance of natural energy
Besides helping to release the qi or blood stagnation, symptoms of PMS caused by imbalance of yin and yang qi in the women body before ovulation, Acupressure helps to restore the balance of the natural energy through putting pressure in the stimulating point, thereby relieving or eliminating the pre-menstrual syndrome.

3. Releasing pain and cramps
Acupressure also helps to the muscles to relax. By applying pressure at the certain point in the body, it helps to relieve the over active resulting in lessening the menstrual pain and cramps.

4. Circulatory system
By applying pressure in certain points in the body, acupressure helps to improve blood circulation in the body including the abdominal region, resulting in improve the transportation of nutrients to our body's cells need and lessening the nervous tension for some women with premenstrual syndrome.

5. Increase kidney function
Some women with symptoms of water retention may be caused by imbalance of kidney qi or lymphatic inability in fluid regulation. By applying fingers and thumb in certain meridian points, acupuncture helps to restore the kidney and lymphatic qi resulting in increasing the fluid secretion and lessening the problems of water retention.
