    Gathered Flannel Scarf

    • Cut two pieces of flannel approximately 10 inches wide by 60 inches long. Cut two more pieces approximately 20 inches long by 3 inches wide. Cut a 4-inch section of flannel off the long pieces. Sew a basting stitch along the long sides of the 20-inch-by-3-inch pieces. Gather the edges until they are 10 inches long. Sew the gathered pieces to the now 56-inch-long flannel pieces, right sides together. Attach the 4-inch piece to the other end of the gathered piece, right sides together, and sew. When you have both pieces assembled in this manner, place the completed scarf sides on top of each other, right sides together, and sew around the edges, leaving a small section open to turn the scarf right side out. Turn the scarf and hand stitch the opening shut.

    Trimmings Scarf

    • Gather several strips of trimmings of different types, such as lace trimmings, crocheted trimmings and pom-pom trimmings. Cut a length of flannel that is approximately 10 inches wide by 60 inches long. Cut the trimmings to 60 inches long. Lay the trimmings on top of the flannel and pin in place. Sew the trimmings to the flannel.

    Ruffled Scarf

    • With a lightweight fabric, sew together several pieces of 6-inch-wide fabric to create a piece 6 inches wide by approximately 120 inches long. Iron 0.5 inch of the fabric down all along the edge of the scarf. Hem along the folded edge. Insert elastic thread into a sewing machine bobbin and sew a line of stitching up the middle of the scarf. Repeat this to create a second line of elastic thread. As you sew, the scarf will ruffle.

    Fringed Fleece Scarf

    • Cut two pieces of fleece, 10 inches by 60 inches. They can be the same color or different colors, as you prefer. Pin them together and sew along all four sides. Mark the center line of the scarf and then sew a line 0.5 inch along either side of the center line. Cut the long side of the scarf at 1-inch intervals almost up to the line of the stitching. Be careful not to cut into your stitching line.
