Just as Holy is known as the festival of colors in India, Diwali is known as the festival of lights.. This is one of the biggest festivals in India. In order to celebrate this festival a national holiday is not only given in India, but also in some other countries like Singapore, Myanmar, Mouritius, Malaysia etc. This festival is generally held in the month of October-November.
The houses, streets, and almost every place are decorated with lights. In homes, candles are lit and placed all over. Another important part of this festival is firecrackers. One can see a huge collection of these firecrackers in the market. Young people especially are very interested to buy these firecrackers. In many places competitions are also held on this day. In West Bengal, it comes on the day after Kali Puja.

It is believed that when Ramchandra, the king of Ayodhya came back home along with his brother and wife after living in exile for fourteen years. The people of Ayodha welcomed their king by lighting earthen lamps or diyas and they also burst firecrackers. This is how this particular festival originated. The word Diwali is a short form of the word Deepavali which actually means a row or chain of lamps.

Deepavali starts with Dhanteras, it is a custom for the businessmen to start their financial year on that day. During the festival of Dhanteras many people buy gold, silver and such other precious metals. The celebration of the festival of lights finally it ends with celebration of Bhai Dooj.

Not just fireworks and lights, Diwali is a festival of various special food too. Sweets like laddu, sohan papdi, barfi, moti pak; a variety of snacks are made in homes by housewives on this occasion. Kheer, kachori, balusai, dry fruits are also made or bought and exchanged among relatives and friends.

The whole country gets lighted up during this festival. Companies pay bonus to their employees, people buys new dresses and other accessories for their families and children. During Deepavali a number of special offers are also given out. The houses of people are cleaned up and lamps or diyas are kept are kept burning all night long to welcome Devi Laxmi, the Hindu Goddess of wealth and prosperity. During this festival of light the houses of people are nicely decorated and guests are welcomed.

This festival has a lot of significance in the lives of Indians. Deepavali is a festival that symbolizes the defeat of evil and the victory of good. Crackers are burnt during this festival to drive away evil forces. The night sky during the time of this festival looks amazing as it is lighted up with brilliant firework. However, lighting crackers not only causes a lot of air population but also sound population. As a result of this the government has put up a lot of restrictions. Diwali Festival is one of the most significant festivals in India and so it is celebrated with great pomp and show.
