New homes and renovations projects often feature high windows for abundant light and an eye-catching architectural feature. Addition of these types of windows creates dramatic ambiance, but may leave you scratching your head when it comes to choosing window treatments. Some choose to leave the windows bare. However, stylish window treatment options exist if you prefer to cover your windows. - Installing remote controlled window treatments on high windows eliminates the need to get a ladder to open and close blinds using a cord. Using the remote control, you can instantly allow or block as much light as you desire on high windows. The remote also eliminates the unsightly cord hanging from the window treatment. Just aim the remote control to open and close the window treatment. You can choose blinds in different colors and materials to match the decor and formality of your room.
Cellular shades, also known as honeycomb shades, have a pleated look and can operate by remote control. The layers of pleated materials trap air and create a layer of insulation that will keep your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Purchase them with a fitting system for high windows or skylights. This gives the treatments a custom look that covers the windows without creating unsightly gaps around the edges. - Deviate from traditional window treatments. Replace the glass in high windows with stained glass panels or frosted windows. It adds privacy that still allows the light to come in. Have an artist customize panels of stained glass to mimic a piece of art or your favorite scenery. If you are a do-it yourselfer, purchase acrylic film from a craft store. Use it to cover high windows. You can cut shapes or purchase a pre-cut kit that mimics the look of stained or leaded glass.
- Hang window treatments from the top of the window to the floor. This makes the room look balanced. Choose lined window treatments to soften the sound in a room with high windows. Choose deep or bold colors if you prefer that the height of the windows take center-stage. If you select pleated window treatments, ensure that they feature wide pleats -- at least 6 inches between each one -- to accommodate for their longer length and overwhelming size. The longer length of the window treatments on high windows may dictate that you have them custom designed. In a room where you have double-story windows (one window above the other), decorate only lower windows to bring the scale of the room down. This treatment is ideal for high windows that do not require privacy.
