    • The LaserJet 5M is a product by Hewlett-Packard, a company created in the 1930s by Dave Packard and Bill Hewlett in a shed behind Bill Hewlett's house. In the 1980s, HP began its LaserJet line of printers, and it continues with the LaserJet 5M, which was introduced in 1995. It is a machine that works well for any office or home office application.

    Memory Capacity

    • The LaserJet 5M has 6 megabytes of standard RAM. The laser printer has Adobe Memory Booster technology. Because the printer comes with two universal SIMM slots, you can expand the memory up to 52MB.

    • The LaserJet 5M supports both HP PCL 6 and Adobe PostScript Level 2.

    Compatable Fonts

    • The LaserJet 5 supports 45 TrueType fonts that are scalable and 65 other typefaces that are also scalable. These last fonts are contained on a disc included with the LaserJett. There are 35 Adobe Type 1 fonts and 75 other fonts that are scalable for Windows.

    Speed and Resolution

    • The LaserJet 5M prints 12 pages per minute. The resolution of the printer is 600 by 600 dots per inch and comes with Resolution Enhancement technology and a microfine toner that is able to do 600 dots per inch. The LaserJet 5M can print 128 shades of gray. According to HP, Resolution Enhancement technology is "a halftone technology for obtaining superior image quality on a laser printer by utilizing laser modulations."

    Management and Connectivity

    • The LaserJet 5M comes with Enhanced HP JetAdmin printer management software that guides you through the setup process, and helps manager the printer. The LaserJet 5M has five methods of connectivity: an IrDA-compliant infrared port, RS-232 nine-pin serial interface, a card for LocalTalk and Ethernet 10Base-T/BNC and a parallel interface that is IEEE 1284 ECP-compliant and bi-directional. The infrared port requires an adapter.

    • The LaserJet 5M can hold 850 pages of laser paper and 75 envelopes. It comes with the capacity for printing 100 sheets and No. 10 envelope -- envelopes that measure 4 1/8 inches by 9 1/2 inches -- in the first tray, and the capacity for printing 250 sheets and No. 2 envelopes -- envelopes that are 12 1/2 inches by 18 1/2 inches -- in the second tray. The output tray holds 250 sheets. The bins can hold more than one paper size, ranging from legal to letter, as well as five sizes of envelopes ranging from No. 10 envelopes to envelopes for B5 paper -- 9.8 inches to 6.9 inches. It can handle paper types including recycled, copier, transparencies and labels.

    • The LaserJet 5M is 17.4 inches wide, 11.8 inches tall and 16 inches deep. It weighs 37 pounds. It can print up to 35,000 pages each month.
