Secure the Back Side of the Fabric
Finishing an Embroidered Piece as a Plaque
Finishing an embroidered design as a plaque is a great way to add impact to a piece. The embroidered item becomes a focal point, and looks like it is floating on the background.
This method of finishing works well with any small surface embroidery project. In this sample, I have used the Stem Stitch Butterfly project as a fiinished example.
Another great thing about this finishing technique is that the design is not permamently attached and can be easily removed for laundering - or if you want to change the plaque seasonally.
Materials needed to finish an item as a plaque include acid-free foam-core board cut to the desired sizes for both the plaque and the background, fabric to coordinate with the project, needle and all-purpose sewing threads, t-pins or bead-headed straight pins, a frame in the desired size, and Velcro self-stick hoop and loop dots.
Prepare the embroidered project for mounting by making sure it us clean and wrinkle-free.
Center the embroidered item on the foam core plaque piece, and pin the fabric to the board through the foam core sides.
Be sure to keep the design in the center of the board as you pin. You may need to adjust the pin placement occasionally to keep it centered.
If the design was stitched on evenweave fabric, you can keep the material lined up straight using grain lines of the fabric, keeping the grain parallel with the sides of the board.
Secure the back side of the fabric by lacing the fabric vertically from top to bottom, and then horizontally from side to side, using the needle and thread.
Peel the paper backing and adhere the loop section of the velcro tabs to the center of the back side of the plaque.
Repeat with the second piece of foam core board and the fabric. Attach the hook sections of the velcro tabs to the center of the background.
Place the background in the frame, and then place the plaque in the center of the backgroud using the hook and loop tabs.
