    • 1). Enroll in an accredited program. Alabama requires the successful completion of an accredited respiratory therapy program. Most programs offer both baccalaureate and associate programs. Programs focus on courses in microbiology, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and respiratory health promotion.

    • 2). Apply for a temporary license. Alabama offers two levels of licensure: regular and temporary. Temporary licenses provide recent graduates the opportunity to gain experience, under direct supervision, while preparing for the national examination administered by the National Board of Respiratory (NBRC). Apply within 30 days of your graduation by paying the $25 licensing and $25 application fees (cost as of 2010). Online applications are available. The temporary license is valid for six months and can be renewed once.

    • 3). Register for the CRT certification. The Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) administers the certified respiratory therapist (CRT) exam. The exam covers three major content areas: equipment, therapeutic procedures and clinical data. The exam lasts three hours and consists of 160 multiple-choice questions.

    • 4). Apply for a regular license, once you have successfully completed the CRT exam. Submit the application and pay the $25 application and $75 licensing fees (costs as of 2010), proof of passing the CRT exam and 24 continuing education units if required.

    • 5). Begin networking. Join a professional association to expand your employment search. Consider a membership with the American Association for Respiratory Care. Members receive special benefits like career assistance and access to professional development services. Networking expands your job search by placing you in front of industry professionals.

    • 6). Apply for opportunities. Research available opportunities by visiting online employment boards, contacting people in your network, visiting your local one-stop career center, contacting hospitals and physician's offices. Submit your resume and other required materials.

    • 7). Prepare for interviews. Create a list of question you believe a potential employer may ask. Practice your answers to the questions in your mirror, or with a friend or family member. Bring copies of your resume and make sure you ask plenty of questions about expectations, general facility regulations and position specific requirements.
