There are many steps that we can take to insure the aging process is not something that overwhelms us. This is true whether we ourselves are the aging person of concern or whether that person is our loved ones. The tips delineated below will guide us through a few of the more critical of these steps.

Add vitamin D supplements to your diet to possibly helping slow aging. There is not a consensus yet on the research that shows it's affect. However, vitamin D has other benefits like helping our immune systems, helping the absorption of calcium and others that you might as well add it in even if the jury is still out on the aging affects.

Reduce your calorie intake. Scientific studies show that what and how much you eat may affect the years and quality of your life. Specifically, animal research indicates that restricting calories up to 40 percent fewer than normal have a beneficial effect on the markers of aging and disease. Keep in mind that not every species has shown this improvement and studies on humans, and other primates are still ongoing.

To make sure you are getting a proper amount of nutrients in your life as you age, try drinking smoothies, three to four times each week. Smoothies taste great and are chock full of good things. They typically contain up to five nutritional servings of fruits and vegetables. Even better, smoothies are rather filling, so as a light lunch or a snack, they can help you control your cravings and lose weight!

Reduce the amount of stress that you put on yourself. You do not have to do everything for everyone in your life. If the people in your life have learned to depend on you for things that they could very well do on their own, let them do it themselves more often. Then you can relax more.

A key element to staying young and looking young is to get plenty of sleep. Not only is it important on how you look each day, but it is critical to feeling your best. Everyone's ideal amount of sleep is different so determine when you feel best after different lengths of sleep over a week.

Each night, sleep a minimum of 7 to 9 hours. Insufficient sleep can lead to diseases from depression to heart disease, and has been linked to cancer. Exercise helps. Some doctors recommend melatonin (a hormone produced in humans by the pineal gland) or L-theanine, an amino acid found in tea. See an age management physician for healthy sleeping advice.

Maintain a positive attitude. You're only as old as you feel, and if you stay positive aging can be a wonderful time of your life. Make sure you start every day giving thanks for what you have in your life, and watch how much better the day is when you approach it happily.

Enjoy the time you have left! More than ever in your life, you have the freedom to do what you want to do and the ability to make things happen. Look at every day as if it was your last.

A great way to keep looking young is to take care of your teeth and keep them white. White teeth are a key to your face and smile looking young. Cut back on the coffee and red wine which will stain the enamel of the teeth, and use some teeth whitening products to help improve their color.

As you age, do not forget to block out the sun! Keep applying sunscreen. This will help your age spots stay small and not enlarge or keep multiplying. Wear sunscreen every day, even in the winter. This will help keep your skin youthful and diminish the appearance of age spots.

Engage in activities that will improve and strengthen your memory, like looking at old family photographs. As you get older, events of the past may slowly slip away from your memory. However, if you keep your memory fresh by revisiting past events and walking down memory lane, it will keep that part of your brain alive.

Most people gain weight as they become older. Staying on the thin side will reduce your risk of a host of different ailments, including type 2 diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Follow a proper diet combined with an exercise regimen. This will lessen the effects of aging and keep your weight at a healthy level.

Take care of your skin. As people age, their skin starts wrinkling, becoming drier and less elastic in the process. But taking care of your skin is sure to keep it softer and looking nicer. Wear sunscreen of at least SPF30, moisturize and cover your skin with light, loose-fitting clothing, when you are out in the sun.

To limit the signs of aging, try to reduce the times that you go out for fast food. Fast food contains a lot of fat, which can stay in your body and make you more prone to conditions such as heart disease. Combat the cravings that you have and be strong if you want to improve the way that you look.

Preparation is the key to successful aging. We can take those steps ourselves, but it is imperative that we do them in a timely manner. The hints above are a guide to light our way.
