To be successful in life you must set goals so you know where you are going and how to get there. The most successful individuals set goal, usually quite early in life. For many of us the problem lies in the actual goal setting. Like many you may not know how to set goals but this article will help you follow a goal plan.

The Goal

To learn how to set goals and achieve success you first must decide on your goals.  Try to avoid setting large vague goals. For example, a goal to be rich is fine and dandy but you need to follow some smaller interim goals to reach that final achievement. Take a step back from wealth and ask yourself what you can do to become wealthy. Maybe you like to draw and you are attracted to unusual buildings. An architect is a good profession to gain wealth. Ok you have found a goal that will help you to achieve your ultimate goal.

The Research

You know you want to be a wealthy architect. The next step is to do your research.  Find out which type of architect you need to be to make the most money. Should you focus on designing commercial building or large residential homes? Or maybe designing bridges and highways is the way to go. Once you decide what type of architect you wish to be the next step is to decide where in the country, or the world would be the most profitable place to set up shop. And would it be better to join a large architectural firm, a smaller firm or strike out on your own.

The Path

Your research has told you that being a commercial architect in the city of Toronto will be quite profitable over the next 20 years. Now you must set up another interim goal to become an architect. Once again it is time to do some research.  What school would be best to attend? How can I afford to go to that school? What is my back-up plan if I am not accepted to that school? The answer to each of these questions is its own separate goal. You have now set up smaller interim goal to achieve your ultimate goal. If you still feel overwhelmed then break down your goals even more.  

Be Realistic

A very important step in how to set goals is to be realistic. Give yourself plenty of time to achieve your goals. It is impossible to get through 2 years of architect school in 6 months. So plan your goals accordingly. And give yourself time for a few side trips now and then. Tell yourself it is OK to deviate from the path as long as you return to it. Perhaps during your trek to becoming an architect you decide to get married and have children. Both of these events are goals in and of themselves.  Your ultimate goal can be returned to anytime that you choose.

By following these few steps in how to set goals you will find yourself achieving success. Whether your goal is short term or long term remember to set yourselves small interim goals so you do not get overwhelmed.
