How to Paint Scratched Wood Trim
- 1). If you have lighter scratches that don't go deeply into the wood, simply sand the area until the scratch disappears and the trim is smooth. Use a medium-grain sandpaper.
- 2). Wipe the sanded trim with a dry microfiber cloth to remove the dust. Then, use the bristle attachment and vacuum around the trim around where you sanded.
- 3). Prime and repaint the area using the same paint color as the rest of the trim.
- 4). If the scratches are extremely shallow or only in the paint and not the actual wood, you can skip the first three steps and simply fill the scratches in with paint.
- 1). Use a spackling knife to fill in the deep scratches with the wood-filler compound, and smooth the filler so it meets the trim's surface.
- 2). Let the wood filler dry completely. Depending on the type of wood filler you purchase, this can take 1 to 2 hours or up to 12 hours, so be sure to read the instructions on the package.
- 3). Sand the dried wood filler using medium- or fine-grain sandpaper. Sand the wood filler until it is smooth and flush with the rest of the trim.
- 4). Wipe down the sanded trim with a microfiber cloth and vacuum around it to get rid of any dust left over from sanding. Prime and repaint the trim.
