Why does England have so many CCTV Cameras?

Those who have not been to London England may be unaware of the CCTV situation and those who already live there may actually be curious as to why there are so many. Both of these are plausible situations and with that being the case, you are probably looking for some information relating to why London has so many CCTV cameras. Prior to 1993, there were not quite as many CCTV cameras in London, and it all started with what we know as the Bishopsgate bombing.

This even occurred when the Provisional Irish Republican Army detonated a truck bomb in the center of London's financial district. There were not many casualties in this attack. As a matter of fact, only one person actually died, but forty-four were injured and over one billion euros in damage was caused to the financial district. As a result of this a number of cameras were installed throughout London, and such cameras quickly became standard in every district. The entrance to London is now known as the 'Ring of Steel' and the roads are specifically designed to slow down approaching cars.

Many individuals living in London are concerned that these cameras are creating a sort of Orwellian society, and in a way they are doing just that. At the moment it is quite clear that the police are still required to play by certain rules, one of those rules being the notification of CCTV recording. The majority of businesses and public areas have signs posted that declare the presence of the CCTV cameras as well as the purpose of the posted cameras. There are some however that do not have any notification which makes one raise an eyebrow.

Note that not all of the existing Close Circuit Television cameras are real. Some have actually been posted as dummy cameras and this adds an additional layer of confusion. Something to note however is that even dummy cameras can serve a very distinct purpose in a city like London.

The results of the CCTV cameras are difficult to argue with. With thousands of cameras lining the streets and the double decker buses throughout the city of London, The presence of these cameras has created a severe observance for even the simplest of laws. Almost no one drives over the speed limit, and many visitors to the city have almost no idea that they are being captured on several thousand cameras as they traverse the foreign landscape. While the cameras are not all owned by the police, they can be accessed by anyone in an authority position which is something that people will think about twice before attempting to commit any sort of crime. Whether or not they will continue to be effective, or whether they will cause public unrest at an unacceptable scale will remain to be seen.
