Medieval Festivals & Fairs
- Medieval festivals routinely occur throughout the Northeastern portion of the U.S. Some of the larger festivals include the Great Lakes Medieval Faire and Marketplace which is held in Rock Creek, Ohio, and runs weekends in both July and August. Highlights of the festival include jousting tournaments, strolling performers and medieval theme food and drinks. For those closer to Manheim, Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Fair is the fall option for those seeking to return to a period of courts and jesters. The PA Renaissance Fair offers theme weekends, each and every weekend between August and October. Some of the specialized theme events, all with medieval roots, include Scottish Weekend, Irish Weekend and Chivalry and Romance. Additional festivals and events centered around medieval times such as the Vienna, Virginia, Vienna United Methodist Church Renaissance Festival or the New York Renaissance Fair held in Lincoln Park, New York, every year between the beginning of August and the end of September. Additional events, festivals and fairs are located in Connecticut, Massachusetts and Maine.
- Though the Southern portion of the United States is better known for festivals and fairs devoted to Southern culture and hospitality, plenty of medieval events can be found. There is the Alabama Renaissance Faire in Florence, Alabama, or the Georgia Renaissance Festival hosted and held in Fairburn, Georgia. Florida takes medieval events to a different level by offering subsequent events in the same general location. The Florida Renaissance Festival begins in Key Biscayne in January and the picks back up and runs between February and March in Deerfield Beach. Additional events can be found in Kentucky, Louisiana and North Carolina. Throughout the southern portion of the country, renaissance festivals put traditional southern cooking and music on hold to highlight the Celtic atmosphere associated with such submersion events.
- The Midwest is also home to annual medieval festivals and events. Some of those affairs include the Medieval Fair of Norman, located in Norman, Oklahoma. The Norman event occurs once per year, typically during the first full weekend of April. Highlights of the fair include free admission, a bevy of food and craft vendors, musical performances and performers decked out in medieval attire. The Nebraska Renaissance Faire runs for two full weekends that span between April and May. Held at the Bellevue Berry & Pumpkin Ranch in Papillion, the event is located less than ten miles outside of Omaha. In Iowa, the Iowa Renaissance Fair is held during Memorial Day Weekend at Middle Amana Park located in Amana, Iowa.
- The Western portion of the United States also offers up plenty of renaissance events suitable for those seeking festivals paying homage to the way in which peasants, paupers and jesters lived. California celebrates such festivals throughout the state. The Original Renaissance Pleasure Faire, located in Irwindale, California, is held during weekends in both April and May. Further to the north, in Hollister, California, the Northern California Renaissance Faire can be found throughout September and October during the weekend. Both festivals highlight food, crafts, performers, music and character performances. Additional festivals in the western portion of the country focused on the Renaissance include the Pacific Northwest Scottish Highland Games located in Washington, the Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire in Oregon and the Boulder City Renaissance Faire in Nevada.
