Esteemed Fort St. George
Fort St. George was established in 1644 and it was once the Headquarters of British East India Company. This coastal town fort was soon gaining importance for the trade and commerce and slowly a new city was born, which is now called as Chennai. This fort has got its name from St. George, who is believed to be a saint of England.
The fort complex comprises of St. Mary's church, a light house, Historical fort museum, flag staff and war memorial. This fort presently houses the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly and the Secretariat.
St. Mary's church
St. Mary's church is the oldest church and the first Anglican Church built in 1680. The oldest British tombstones present in India are in the courtyard of this church. This church is popularly called as €'Westminster Abbey of the East€.
Museum
The museum depicts the culture and lifestyle of British and it was built in the year 1790, as a public exchange. The historical fort museum preserves and showcases the past era left over's like uniforms, medals, coins, weapons, costumes used by the British and old paintings of the British Governors and other officers of that time. The top roof of the building was a site for light house of this city and it was constructed in the year 1796.
You can visit the museum from 10 am to 5 pm and it is closed on Fridays. Entry fee is charged for adults and it is free for children below 15 years.
