Ferrari 458 Italia: Vehicle Dynamic & Performance Of The Ferrari 458
The new 458 Italia is a car with many mechanical and technical improvements if compared to the F430. These elements have been implemented to enhance the sports character of this Ferrari.
The geometry and materials used for the manifold ducts are designed to emphasize certain frequencies, harmonizing the intake note with the exhaust note. The resulting sound perceived in the passenger compartment, which includes all the harmonics from the second to the tenth order, is clear and powerful. Under full acceleration, the sound is even richer and more involving than that of the F430.
Fuel System
Splitting the injection into two consecutive stages improves combustion efficiency, increasing torque at low engine speed by up to 5%. This makes the engine more tractable even in the low load conditions. The variable geometry intake system uses three butterfly valves located inside a central communicating body to achieve four different configurations for maximum torque and power in all rev bands.
Vehicle Dynamic & Performance
Unlike the 430 Scuderia, the E-diff and F1 trac control software resided in a single control unit (BOSCH ESP) which minimizes communication times between the two system which together with evolved system logic enhance the performance of the car.
The 458 Italia has proven itself capable of outstanding performance in terms of braking distance (100-0 km/h and 200-0 km/h) and this stopping power was achieved with tires developed specifically for the car and by optimizing control system and logic (in collaboration with Bosch). The braking system is now called Pre""fill Ferrari logic and works to minimize response times, braking begins as soon as the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal. Also for mid/high grip, the integrated control logic for E-diff3 and ABS ensure more precise vehicle speed estimation, improved braking torque control and greater braking torque stability when braking with abs activated.
Braking System
The entire Ferrari range is equipped with carbon ceramic brake discs as standard. The performance advantages involve numerous aspects directly linked to the use of integrated vehicle dynamics control systems, such as braking consistency and reduced braking distances and weight. The vehicle dynamics control system have made even shorter braking distances than the 430 Scuderia possible with 100 km/h-0 reduced to 32.5m, 200km/h-0 reduced to 12.8 m.
Suspension
The advantages of the new double "L" wishbone front suspension over the current double "A" wishbone layout are greater longitudinal flexibility, better bump absorption capacity, less noise and better handling.
