Decorating Tips for High Walls

    Painting Walls

    • If you paint walls in a small room with low walls in a dark color, you risk a room that feels boxed in and small. However, when you have very tall walls with a high ceiling, a dark color can be used very effectively. On a tall wall, a dark color creates a sense of drama in the room. It also helps the room feel more intimate and less expansive.

    Borders

    • Creating a border around the room is a way to keep the eye within the room itself instead of having it drawn upwards into the vast expanse of wall and ceiling above. Borders can be created a number of different ways. Painting the walls more than one color creates definitions and segments of the wall that keeps the eye lowered. In addition, a wallpaper border also separates the wall into an upper and lower portion.

    Artwork

    • On a large, high wall, hang artwork to draw the eye to something other than the immensity of the wall. Hanging a large piece of art can make a tall wall interesting, but avoid the common mistake of hanging it too high. This only draws attention up and away from where you want it in the heart of the room. Instead, hang art at eye level to make the wall visually interesting and to keep the focus on the right part of the wall.

    Crown Molding

    • Adding crown molding to the top of a very tall wall is another way to make the wall itself more interesting to look at. However, you need to keep proportion in mind if you are going to use crown molding on a tall wall. Make sure that the molding you select is very large. That way, it will be bold enough to make a statement and be interesting on the wall. Regular-sized molding on a wall twice as tall as normal will look small, insignificant and out of place.
