How to Cut the Corner for a Formica Counter Top
- 1). Mark a cutting line across the Formica surface with a pencil and straightedge. Cover this line with a strip of masking tape, making sure to keep the line running down the center. Mark a second cutting line on top of the masking tape. The masking tape will prevent the Formica from chipping as you cut through the material.
- 2). Place the Formica onto a stable work surface with the area that you're cutting extending over the edge. Clamp the counter down to the surface to stabilize it further.
- 3). Cut through the Formica counter top with a fine-toothed handsaw, following the line on the masking tape as you do so. Continue cutting along the line completely through the Formica.
- 4). Remove the remaining masking tape. Sand the edge of the Formica counter top with medium-grit sandpaper at a 45-degree angle to smooth the material, leaving a slight rounded edge along the line of the cut. Sand the core wood along the cut edge smooth as well.
