Traveling, whether for work or for fun, can become a challenge to eating healthy. Most of us would agree on the fact that we consume unhealthy food unknowingly at times. If, for instance, you are on a vacation, you would be tempted to eat all sorts of food just to make sure you have not missed on anything good! Being on the road or an airplane, both carry their own reasons of eating more and unhealthy.

Let's face it, being conscious about your diet and the choice of food you eat is a challenge. You would often feel sick, exhausted or even bloated on your journeys. But no worries now! Here is a guide for you to improve your eating habits while traveling.

Planning and preparing before time

You should plan in advance and do some research before your journey. You should be aware about common foods and restaurants. Increase the number of meals to avoid exhaustion on your trip.

By ‘healthy snacks' we are referring to nuts and dried fruits such as almonds and walnuts, fresh fruits such as apples and oranges, salads, granola bars, cereals etc. Such snacks taste good, they are convenient to eat and they keep your sugar level maintained. You wouldn't want to feel low while traveling. If you couldn't pack these in your bag, you can always buy them on your way. We also recommend that you make your coffee/tea at home and store it in a thermos as it is more hygienic and less fattening.

A healthy breakfast and a good choice of restaurants

How tempting it is when you wake up in your hotel and see a buffet with donuts, waffles, cakes and bagels. All of these are high calorie and full of fat food items, and we understand that it is extremely difficult to avoid them. These temptations are mainly the reason one gains weight on a trip. We are not asking you to look away from these mouth-watering dishes, we are merely asking you to eat them with a combination of healthy items. Eat apples, eggs, yogurt and oatmeal (proteins and fiber) to take care of your hunger and simply taste other delicious food to keep your cravings satisfied. Otherwise you will certainly feel guilty on missing those things later. When choosing a place to eat, prefer grilled, baked or steamed food along with salads to fill you up!

Avoid fast food

Fast food is your enemy if you have too much of it! Pizzas and burgers make you feel out of the world when you crave for them, but they are overloaded with fats that are extremely bad for you. Avoid fried items. If you are out of options, the least you can do is to avoid mayo and cheese in your burger, or skip fried chicken or french fries.

Stay hydrated and move a lot

Water is very important to avoid cramps, dehydration and headaches. Take a walk whenever you get a chance and make sure you move as much as possible. Being lazy on a trip is always a bad idea.

Well, the next time you travel make sure to follow all these guidelines and when you get back you will realize that neither have you gained weight, nor have you lost. You will also feel surprisingly fresh and agile.
