  Spruce up the look of your school lunchroom with a colorful bulletin board that can entertain as well as educate the students. Create an interactive display using food- and nutrition-related images, text and challenges that will keep the children busy as they wait in line for lunch or wait for dismissal once they're finished eating.
  
  

Food Pyramid

• Decorate the lunchroom bulletin board with images of the Food Guide Pyramid designed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to show children and adults how many items from each food group to eat each day. In addition to colorful graphics, post simple explanations of the different food group colors on the pyramid such as orange for grains, green for vegetables, blue for dairy products, purple for proteins, yellow for healthy fats and oils and red for fruits. Provide examples of different foods in each group and show how the week's cafeteria offerings break down into the various food groups.
  
  

Healthy Snacks

• Help the children make healthy eating choices when they're away from the school lunchroom by designing attention-grabbing lists of healthy snacks. Alongside the names of typical junk food favorites, post pictures and delectable descriptions of alternatives such as peanut butter on celery, apple slices dipped in fruit yogurt or plain yogurt sprinkled with crunchy granola. Invite the children to create their own healthy snack recipes and to bring in a photo, ingredient list and instructions to post on the bulletin board.
  
  

Worker Spotlight

• Let the children get to know the lunchroom employees by posting profiles on the lunchroom bulletin board. In addition to the employee's photo, include a brief question-and-answer sheet that showcases the worker's favorite foods, television shows, movies and books. If your school allows students to work in the cafeteria as volunteers, post photos of the week's helpers and a list of each student's favorite foods, songs, class subjects and hobbies.
  
  

Cafeteria Menu

• Inform students and parents of upcoming cafeteria menu items by posting a list of lunch offerings for the upcoming week or month. In addition to a list of the main dish and side dishes on the menu, provide a description of available condiments and ways that students can make their least favorite menu items more enticing.
  
  

Food Trivia

• Teach the children fast facts about nutrition and food safety by posting a daily trivia quiz on the cafeteria bulletin board. Include questions about food origins, how different fruits and vegetables are grown, safe food handling practices and how many calories different foods provide, for example. Lighten the mood with questions about the cartoon characters that represent different food brands or the foods that characters ate in scenes of well-known children's movies. Each day, post the answer to the previous question and give the children a new food-related query.
