Electric blankets first appeared in the early 1900's. Titled "heating pads" or "warming quilts", they were initially big, bulky heating devices that were more dangerous than effective. Over time, the electric blanket has been refined in design and function. The modern heating blanket has many features designed for ease of use and premium quality. - An electric mattress pad is identical to a standard mattress pad, but has heating wires in it. Over time the electric mattress pad has become quite sophisticated, with companies producing models that can be heated to different temperatures on either side of the bed, to cater to the preference of multiple bed occupants, as well as ergonomic pads, and pads with minimal wiring for as little discomfort as possible. With pricing ranging from $50-$150 (as of 2010), an electric mattress pad is a reasonable investment for individuals looking to save on an overall heating bill, yet still remain warm in the colder seasons.
- Electric blankets are most common as an over-blanket or duvet, a blanket that covers the top of the bed, rather than going underneath the sheets, like the electric mattress pad. You can set them to a high heat to warm the bed before getting in, and then lower the heat to maintain a lesser temperature throughout the night. There are many different brands of blankets, and those which are considered to be of the highest quality frequently include minimal wiring and heat up quickly.
- As with a standard throw blanket, the electric throw blanket is lightweight and easily wrapped around the shoulders or draped over the lap. Noted for its versatility and mobile nature, the electric throw is designed to be convenient, comfortable, and transportable. Unlike a standard electric blanket, the throw is not meant to be used in bed, but rather throughout the day to keep heating costs low and comfort high.
