How to Make a Campaign Yard Sign

    • 1). Create a new Microsoft Word document sized at 18 by 24 inches. Select "Page Layout" under the "Page Layout" or "File" menu (it varies by version of Word) and then the "Page" tab to type in your custom size.

    • 2). Decide on two or three colors for your campaign sign. One should be for your background and one for your text. You can add a third color for your headline if you want.

    • 3). Type in the message for your campaign yard sign. Limit the sign to three lines with no more than three or four words per line. Change the color of the lettering to one (or two) of the colors that you chose in the last step. Adjust the size of the text ("Home" then "Font") to the maximum that will fit comfortably within the limits of the sign.

    • 4). Click "Page Layout" then "Page Color" on the Word main menu. Select the other color that you want for your campaign yard sign---this will change the background of the sign to that color.

    • 5). Save the campaign sign. Convert it to a PDF using either Adobe Acrobat (click "Create PDF" on the "Acrobat" toolbar within Word) or CreatePDF.adobe.com (upload the Word file to this online tool, and it will convert the file automatically). PDFs are easy for printers to handle.

    • 6). Email the PDF file to a copy shop or printing service. Ask the printer to produce your file on high-gloss PVC paper (a thin plastic paper that is resistant to the rain). You need two sheets for each campaign yard sign that you want to produce---front and back.

    • 7). Place two sheets back to back and staple the edges (you can also use double-sided tape, though this may not be as secure for an outdoor sign). Slide the new campaign sign over a wire stake frame.
