3 Reasons Why I Used To Struggle To Build Muscle In My 20s
I am now 34 years old at the time of writing and without wanting to boast, am now in pretty good shape. I have very little body fat anywhere on my body and have some well-defined arm, chest and ab muscles.
However I have only managed to get this body by working extremely hard, and to be honest I struggled to get any kind of results for many years when I was in my 20s. There are three reasons for this.
First of all the fact is that I never really took my diet that seriously. I knew that I should have been eating lots of healthy food and cutting out all the junk food, but I continued eating foods such as pizza, chips and biscuits. Therefore although I was using exercise bikes and rowing machines to burn fat, I still had too much body because of my poor diet.
A second reason why I didn't achieve very good results was that I wasn't taking any supplements that could have helped me. I noticed that no matter how hard I tried to continue lifting heavier and heavier weights, my overall muscle mass wasn't really increasing that much.
Nowadays I always have protein drinks or protein bars after my workouts, and I will also try to eat foods that are high in protein as well. This usually consists of chicken, tuna or sardines.
Finally one other reason why my body would often stay the same for months on end is because I didn't push myself hard enough. I would often go long periods of time without varying my workouts, and would fail to push myself even further, which I know now was a big mistake.
The fact is that you cannot keep on lifting the same amount of weight and doing the exact same exercises week after week, month after month. You have to keep on moving up to heavier and heavier weights (whilst keeping good form to avoid injuries), regardless of what type of strength training you may be doing.
So hopefully you can see where I went wrong earlier on in my life, and can avoid making the same mistakes yourself. It is not easy to build a great looking body because it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. However if you get good advice from a well qualified expert, you should be able to get in shape and build a great looking body over time.
You just need to apply yourself and keep pushing yourself to improve your strength and your performance, and the results will hopefully follow.
